The security and safety of employees and workers, as well as the residents in the surrounding regions, remains the top priority for Calvert Cliffs. Constellation Energy and Calvert Cliffs Units 1 & 2 are proud of their safety record. Since September 11, 2001, Calvert Cliffs has undertaken new security measures in order to further enhance site security.
The U.S. EPR design is
unique in its security features in part due to its double containment dome. Practically speaking, this means that the nuclear reactor is protected against
a direct hit from an airplane. In addition, redundant safety systems provide extra levels of protection.
Currently, used nuclear fuel is stored safely at nuclear power plant sites across the country. (Read more from the Department of Energy.)
Until a national repository is built and operating, used fuel from Unit 3 would be safely and securely stored in much the same way as Units 1 & 2 - in a secured area on-site and in containers designed to last until a permanent solution can be found.
