Letter to CC3 supporters - November 2009
In June 2009
The Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) approved UniStar’s application for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) for the potential Calvert Cliffs 3 nuclear energy facility in southern Maryland. The order addresses a range of environmental and reliability impacts of the proposed facility, including air, water, wetlands, and cultural and historic impacts. A CPCN is required before construction can begin.

UniStar Nuclear Energy (UNE), a 50-50 joint venture between Constellation Energy and the EDF Group, is considering building a new nuclear reactor (PDF 35KB) on a site adjacent to Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Units 1 & 2 (PDF - 139KB). This reactor, a U.S. EPR™ design, is poised to be one of the first new reactors built in more than 30 years in the United States. It would be one in a fleet of standardized U.S. EPR™ facilities around the country.
In July 2007, UniStar Nuclear Energy took the first step towards building this plant by filing a portion of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission combined licensing application. The remainder of the application was filed in early 2008. Other state and federal permits and license applications are also pending.
