Dear Calvert Cliffs 3 Supporter:
As many of you may have heard, numerous media outlets are reporting that tomorrow, February 16, President Barack Obama will announce that Southern Company’s Vogtle 3 and 4 project in Georgia is the first recipient of a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) conditional commitment for a loan guarantee for an advanced new nuclear energy project.
This long-awaited announcement, which finally will bring to fruition an essential component of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, will be an exciting first step in the U.S nuclear energy revival. We remain hopeful that DOE approval of UniStar Nuclear Energy’s loan guarantee application for Calvert Cliffs 3 is soon to follow.
Tomorrow’s announcement, along with the President’s strong statement in favor of new nuclear energy made during his State of the Union address in January and his 2011 Budget to increase DOE’s loan guarantee allocation to $54.5 billion from the current $18.5 available for advanced new nuclear energy projects, are important steps toward helping to bring about a low-carbon energy future and to create the 350,000 jobs associated with a U.S. nuclear renaissance. However, alone, they are not enough.
We need you to contact your elected representatives in Congress now to urge them to support the President’s budget proposal for a $36 billion increase in loan guarantees for advanced new nuclear energy projects, so additional projects not currently under consideration for a share of the existing $18.5 billion, including other U.S. EPR™ reactor projects proposed by UniStar and its partners, are able to move forward.
With the President’s pending announcement involving Southern Company’s Vogtle site, and our hope that word regarding Calvert Cliffs 3’s loan guarantee application will be soon to follow, tomorrow is poised to be a monumental day in the history of the U.S. nuclear energy revival. Thank you for your ongoing support of Calvert Cliffs 3 and for being a part of this vital effort to ensure America’s clean-air energy future and the creation of hundreds of thousands of new construction, manufacturing, engineering and operations careers that a U.S. nuclear revival will bring.
Sincerely,

George Vanderheyden
CEO and President
